This class will develop the critical reading and writing skills necessary for success in college and career. English 9 is a semester course.

This class is designed for the exceptionally self-motivated student of English and reading. A research project will be required in this class. Students will do expository, narrative, persuasive. Honors English 9 is a one-semester course for one English credit.

CP English 11 focuses on American literature and nonfiction texts that explore identity,
justice, and the American experience. Students strengthen their reading, writing, speaking, and critical thinking skills through close reading, discussion, and structured writing tasks. Emphasis is placed on developing clear arguments, analyzing complex texts, and preparing students for college-level expectations.
AP English Language and Composition / Advanced Placement (11)
- Prerequisites: Discussion with Counselor
- Preparation for Exam: AP English Language & Composition Exam offered by the College Board in May; ACT
This course is intended for the academically advanced student. AP English Language and Composition engages students in becoming skilled readers of prose written in a variety of periods, disciplines, and rhetorical contexts, and in becoming skilled writers who compose for a variety of purposes.
English Composition I / Dual Enrollment (11-12)
- Prerequisites: ACT of 19 in reading and 18 in English / GPA of 3.6
- Course Type: Dual Enrollment through Roane State
This course is intended for students who are ready for a challenging, college-level English course. Composition I primarily focuses on developing proficiency in expressing oneself in writing, finding and using resources to answer questions or solve problems, and learning to analyze and critically evaluate ideas, arguments, and points of view.

English 12 CP

CP English 12 will prepare students for college and career readiness through the study of classic and contemporary literature, nonfiction, and argumentative texts. Students refine analytical reading and academic writing skills while engaging in discussions, presentations, and research-based writing. The course emphasizes independent thinking, effective communication, and reflection as students prepare for postsecondary pathways.
AP English Literature & Composition / Advanced Placement (12)

- Preparation for Exam: AP English Literature & Composition Exam offered by the College Board in May
This course is intended for the academically advanced student. The AP English Literature and Composition course engages students in the careful reading and critical analysis of imaginative literature. Through the close reading of selected texts, students deepen their understanding of the ways writers use language to provide both meaning and pleasure for their readers. As they read, students consider a work’s structure, style, and themes as well as smaller-scale elements such as the use of figurative language, imagery, symbolism, and tone.
English Composition 2 / Dual Enrollment (11-12)
- Prerequisites: ACT of 19 in reading and 18 in English / GPA of 3.6

This course builds on writing and research skills learned in Dual Enrollment Composition I. Composition II focuses on writing based on literature and research. Students will become proficient in literary terminology, writers’ techniques and themes, and interpreting and analyzing short fiction, drama, poetry, and the novel.

This is an elective course that gives students the opportunity to practice their creative writing skills. Four major units are studied: fiction, poetry, short stories, and children’s literature. Individual and class presentations are not required. Students will edit and perfect one of their writing pieces for submission to the LCHS Literary Magazine printed in the spring.

Students will read and critically study the themes, structures, and conventions embedded within a specific genre. Students will explore the intricate elements that define a literary genre, including its thematic core, various stylistic choices, character archetypes, and plot structures using various Young Adult titles as the primary text.

This class offers a variety of learning experiences in business, graphic arts, photography, and writing. This is a production class in which the member accepts responsibility for the creation of the yearbook, video news, and school newspaper. Students who are hard workers, possess specialized talents, and are willing to accept a challenge are encouraged to apply for admission into this class. This class requires a year-long commitment for which students may earn two (2) credits each year enrolled.
Speech / Dual Enrollment (11-12)

- Course Type: Dual Enrollment through Roane State
This course is designed to introduce the student to the skills of interpersonal communication. Emphasis is placed upon the fundamental principles and techniques of public speaking, and the oral and physical aspects of delivery. Emphasis is also placed upon discussion, listening skills, thoughtful examination of diverse ideas, respect for everyone's right to a point of view and the tenets of free speech. Roane State General Education course approved and designed for transfer.
English Language Development 9: This course is for students in grade 9 who have scored below a 4 in each domain of the ELPA21 Summative Assessment.
English Language Development 10: This course is for students in grade 10 who have scored below a 4 in each domain of the ELPA21 Summative Assessment.
English Language Development 11: This course is for students in grade 11 who have scored below a 4 in each domain of the ELPA21 Summative Assessment.
English Language Development 12: This course is for students in grade 12 who have scored below a 4 in each domain of the ELPA21 Summative Assessment.
These four (4) classes are for students who study English as a second language. Course content focuses on mastering the skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking the English language. Placement in one of these classes is based on a combination of home language survey and language proficiency test(s)... Students exit ELD classes by achieving a proficient score on the ELPA21 Summative Assessment.

Desarrollo del idioma inglés 10: este curso está diseñado para estudiantes de 10.º grado que han obtenido una puntuación inferior a 4 en cada uno de los dominios de la evaluación sumativa ELPA21.

Todos los estudiantes multilingües que no estén matriculados en ELD 9, ELD 10, ELD 11 o ELD 12 recibirán asistencia de ELD en uno o más cursos de contenido seleccionados.
Los estudiantes que necesitan servicios directos serán asignados a clases de ELD o clases de apoyo de ELD por parte de profesores de ESL, de acuerdo con los niveles de inglés y las necesidades del curso del estudiante.
Prerrequisitos: Idioma nativo diferente del inglés, experiencia en docencia.
Estas cuatro (4) clases están dirigidas a estudiantes que aprenden inglés como segundo idioma. El contenido del curso se enfoca en el dominio de las habilidades de lectura, escritura, comprensión auditiva y expresión oral en inglés. La asignación a una de estas clases se determina mediante una combinación de una encuesta sobre el idioma del hogar y pruebas de competencia lingüística. Los estudiantes finalizan las clases de ELD al alcanzar una puntuación competente en la evaluación sumativa ELPA21.
